Professional Biography

Matthew P. Steinberg is an Assistant Professor of Education at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education, where he teaches courses in quantitative methods and education research. He is the Faculty Methodologist for Penn’s IES Pre-Doctoral Training Program, a Faculty Affiliate with Penn’s Wharton Public Policy Initiative, a Faculty Fellow with Penn’s Institute for Urban Research and an Affiliated Researcher with the University of Chicago Consortium on Chicago School Research. His research explores questions of educational significance related to school reform and accountability, school climate and safety, teacher evaluation and human capital, and school finance, with a focus on urban school populations. He currently is exploring the impact of school reform in Philadelphia schools, including school closures and school discipline policy. He is also examining the impact of teacher evaluation in Chicago Public Schools on student achievement and teacher turnover. As a Measures of Effective Teaching (MET) Early Career Grantee, he is examining a number of questions related to observation-based measures of teacher performance. Professor Steinberg’s research has (or is scheduled to be) published in leading education and policy journals, including Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, Education Finance and Policy, and the Journal of Human Resources. He received his BA from the University of Virginia, M.S.Ed. from the City College of New York, M.P.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
